Gesamtkunstwerk, or "total design," implies designing every detail of a whole so it becomes, in a sense, greater than the sum of its parts. In a building, this would mean not only designing plans and elevations. Every detail must be considered - including furniture, finished cabinetry, finished trim - extending to the environment outside of the building as well, so as to give integrity and harmony throughout.
